The first solar thermal energy plant in the world with a central receiver and thermal storage in commercial operation was recently installed in Spain (Gemasolar, designed by Sener and property of Torresol Energy). As it can function both day and night, approximately 7,000 hours a year, it represents a significant development in the solar energy sector. The most important project internationally, currently under construction, will soon be in operation in the USA, property of Solar Reserve with UCT technology, an American giant in aerospace engineering. "There is certain agreement worldwide at both the scientific and industrial level that this technology will come to be the most dominate one in the sector because of its manageability and cost, with a yearly production of 7,000 hours and capable of obtaining a kilowatt hour for less than 10 US cents," Enrique Serrano, Director of Operations at Sun to Market (S2M), pointed out.

The company has created, together with the ISE (Energy Systems Engineering) Research Group lead by UC3M professor Domingo Santana, a new design for a central receiver in the tower of this type of plants, the core of these installations. All of the solar energy which comes from the thousands of heliostats that are oriented toward this point is concentrated in this part. "Our new concept enables us to use other types of more economical and feasible materials for this part, as well as to work at a lower temperatures range in order to obtain the same energy result," Serrano explained. For this purpose, they have investigated the functioning of this type of plant and explored its operational limits, including future real prototype tests and an innovative roadmap for a solar energy plant with a central receiver with storage. As a result, they have developed another innovation in the system of energy recovery in the pumping of thermal fluid (salts) to the receiver, which S2M and ISE have both patented. "This system permits an energy recovery above 70%, for which the energy consumption of the power plant decreases, thereby notably improving overall performance," Serrano observed.

These improvements in the material are focused on perfecting the management of this type of power plant so as to increase its integration into the energy market. In addition, the company has developed two other innovations in relation to the information systems: simulation software for the heliostat solar area, and a system for short-term prediction of the specialized solar resource, which takes into account solar rays, clouds, vertical winds in the tower, partial shade, etc. As the company puts it, the aim is to concentrate their R+D+i efforts and offer technology and scientific-technical services related to solar energy in general. As a result, a mixed laboratory will soon be started up between the company and UC3M for collaboration among technicians, scientists and students interested in this area. "The laboratory's midterm objective", they revealed, "is to design, construct and operate a prototype plant in which all the developments carried out can be tested, focusing in-depth on real performance."

The Sun to Market Solutions company creates IT solutions for the design, development and operation of solar electricity power plants, as well as offering consulting and engineering services in this sector. The company was begun in 2009 within the UC3M Business Incubator Science Park, in Leganes Technology Park, which as Serrano points out "has helped us to get in touch with the scientists who could best collaborate on our projects, as well as accompany us in investment forums and introduce us into developing markets such as South America." Since then, the company has already acquired two patents, accumulated a large volume of sales, and opened local offices in the United States, India and China, successively. Furthermore, the S2M staff is mainly composed of young engineers and provides an opportunity for UC3M students to carry out their final year projects. "All of this," Serrano concluded, "makes us very optimistic regarding the future evolution of our company".

Facebook phone may finally become reality

You've heard it before, but this time it may come to fruition: Facebook is working on its own phone.?

Why would it be different this time than in the past, when such an effort was reported, although denied by the social networking giant??

There are at least a few reasons:?Google, definitely not Facebook's BFF, recently completed the purchase of Motorola Mobility; and ahead of Facebook's recent?IPO, the company acknowledged that mobile is a key area in which it needs to grow, with more and more?Facebook users accessing the site via mobile than on computers. And right now, the social network has not pushed advertising ??its key revenue source ? onto mobile. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg contends that will change,?saying recently that transforming its mobile and advertising experience are top priorities in 2012. ? ??

"We don't comment on rumor and speculation," said a Facebook spokeswoman when asked for comment by msnbc.com about the Facebook phone. But, she added, "Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We're working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world."

Of additional interest: Facebook is also looking at buying Opera, the mobile Web browser prized for its efficiency. In a report Tuesday, Reuters quoted Arctic Securities as saying such an acquisition would "enhance the now limited mobile experience of Facebook, improve Facebook's mobile monetization problem, help Facebook retain online game developers leaving the social network over the lack of a mobile platform and further improve Facebook's ability to target ads."?

The New York Times reported over the weekend that "people briefed on Facebook's plans" say the company "hopes to release its own smartphone by next year. These people spoke only on the condition of anonymity for fear of jeopardizing their employment or relationships with Facebook."

Facebook has "already hired more than half a dozen former Apple software and hardware engineers who worked on the?iPhone, and one who worked on the?iPad, the employees and those briefed on the plans said."

Last year, HTC released what was described as a Facebook phone, with a dedicated hard-key button for Facebook on it. The phone, called the Status, never took the market by storm like the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy or Motorola Droid models.?

Chart shows delegates won by GOP presidential candidates since January

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama called Mitt Romney to congratulate him on winning the Republican nomination on Wednesday, just as the Democrat's campaign opened a new critique of Romney by focusing attention on his economic record as governor of Massachusetts.

The president told Romney "he looked forward to an important and healthy debate about America's future," Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said. Romney's campaign said the call was "brief and cordial." Both men wished each other's families well during the upcoming race.

Romney's primary win in Texas on Tuesday pushed him past the 1,144-delegate threshold he needed to claim the nomination.

Obama took the formal step of congratulating his opponent even as his team looked to shift to the Massachusetts story under Romney. Romney's campaign, meanwhile, was bringing attention to failed stimulus projects under Obama and federal money given to green energy companies like Solyndra, a solar firm that received hundreds of millions of dollars from the government only to go bankrupt.

The competing attack-lines came as Romney pivoted from a long primary slog to the Republican nomination and a new summertime window to sway voters who have not yet fully tuned into the presidential campaign. Romney hopes to present himself as a worthy replacement for Obama who can help revitalize a slow-moving economy, the most important issue for voters.

The country is "just beginning a general election, we've gone through a primary ... not a lot of people focus time on the characteristics of a new candidate like myself, and people will get to know me better. My guess is they're going to get to know more about me than they'd like to by the time we're finished," Romney said in an interview on Fox News that aired Wednesday but was taped over the weekend.

For months, Obama and his allies have signaled plans to target Romney's Massachusetts record, with advisers noting that the state's economy lagged in job creation and saw an increase in debt while he was governor from 2003-2007. The critique will build upon a line of attack this month of Romney's record at private equity firm Bain Capital, which Obama's team contends led to job losses and bankrupt companies even while Bain profited.

"There's nothing that Gov. Romney did either in the private sector that created jobs or in the public sector that distinguished himself as a job creator," Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Republicans contend that Obama's critique of the Bain record will backfire because it will give voters the impression that he is anti-business. The focus on Obama's green energy record, including Energy Department funding for companies like Solyndra, gives Romney a chance to rebut Bain because Republicans say Obama essentially played the role of venture capitalist by investing government money in green energy companies.

On Tuesday, Romney raised money in Las Vegas with Donald Trump, the real estate mogul who has stoked doubts about whether Obama was born in America. It was the start of a weeklong push to raise millions of dollars during a West Coast trip designed to help Romney bring in as much cash as possible ahead of a ramped-up campaign schedule later this summer.

The former Massachusetts governor was looking to take advantage of his official claiming of the nomination, a triumph of endurance for a candidate who came up short four years ago and had to fight hard this year as voters flirted with a carousel of GOP rivals. According to the Associated Press count, Romney surpassed the 1,144 delegates needed to win the nomination by winning 105 delegates in the Texas primary, pushing his total to 1,191 delegates.

Romney must now fire up conservatives who still doubt him while persuading swing voters that he can do a better job fixing the nation's struggling economy than Obama. In Obama, he faces a well-funded candidate with a proven campaign team in an election that will be heavily influenced by the economy.

Romney has scheduled fundraisers this week in wealthy California enclaves like Hillsborough, near San Francisco, and Beverly Hills. He has at least one major fundraising event every day for the rest of the week, as well as a series of smaller events.

Red Sox's Valentine calls out Rays' coaches

BOSTON (AP) - Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine called out the Tampa Bay Rays' coaching staff a day after the teams were involved in a benches-clearing scrum.

Valentine said the Rays' staff escalated the tense situation in the ninth inning of Tampa Bay's 7-4 win on Friday night after Red Sox reliever Franklin Morales hit Luke Scott on the right leg. He called their actions as "unprofessional."

"I thought their coaches were really aggressive, as a matter of fact I took offense to the aggressiveness of their coaches." Valentine said. "I thought it was really unprofessional. I was really proud of the way my coaches and what they were trying to do, what they were supposed to do in those situations.

"(The Rays coaches) seemed very immature and out of control," Valentine said. "Coaches are supposed to stop those things from happening and their coaches were agitating, aggravating, and instigating the situation."

Rays manager Joe Maddon was asked a few different times to comment on Valentine's accusations, but avoided it by specifically praising Boston's players.

"I covered everything I wanted to cover on that last night," Maddon said. "The thing I want to cover today is how much respect I have for the Red Sox players. I've been doing this for seven, eight years in the American League East and I have a strong feeling for the professionalism of the Red Sox players during that time - guys like (David) Ortiz and (Dustin) Pedroia and (Kevin) Youkilis and (Josh) Beckett, who's pitching tonight. My respect goes out to them.

"As we move this thing forward, I think we have that kind of respect with this group here. These players have come here to play baseball. We come here to play hard every night," Maddon added. "We've come to think about it as the `Rays way' of doing things."

Benches cleared after Morales threw behind DH Luke Scott with the first pitch of an at-bat and hit him on a 3-1 pitch. Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia stepped in front of Scott as he was looking out at Morales when the benches and bullpens emptied. There was a lot of pushing and shoving along the first base line that carried over behind home plate before order was restored.

Boston pitching coach Bob McClure and bench coach Tim Bogar were noticeably in the middle of things with Rays players.

Afterward, Maddon said of the Red Sox's actions:

"That's truly somebody flexing their muscles on the other side and they need to put them in their back pocket and understand they can hurt their own team for something like that," Maddon said. "To be really carelessly incompetent on their side and truly try to hit someone and throw behind somebody and hitting them in the leg for all the wrong reasons eventually they can get their own guys hurt. That was ridiculous. It was absurd, idiotic. I'll use all those words.

"That was ridiculous. It was absurd, idiotic." He later said the video would show who wanted Morales' action to take place.

University of Maryland, Baltimore to revamp teaching on pain

As part of a federal project aimed at better treating pain, the University of Maryland, Baltimore will begin revamping the way it teaches future doctors, dentists, nurses and pharmacists.

Pain affects approximately 100 million Americans and their treatment and lost productivity are estimated to cost up to $635 billion, according to the National Institutes of Health, which recruited academic centers to help with the problem.

A pain consortium of two dozen NIH agencies received 56 proposals and picked 11 universities to be Centers of Excellence in Pain Education. Over the next three years, they are expected to develop courses in assessing, diagnosing and treating pain, and avoiding abuse of prescription painkillers.

The curriculum developed by each will be posted on a public website that other universities can use to shape their own programs, said Dr. David Thomas, a health scientist administrator in the National Institute on Drug Abuse and a consortium member.

"Pain is not taught to a great degree in medical, nursing, pharmacy and dental schools, or to a degree we consider enough, given the number of people it affects," he said. "We wanted more pain education for providers. So we took the approach of trying to find pain champions in these schools who wanted to get more pain education into their curriculum."

Thomas said the universities were chosen for providing the "biggest impact."

Each school will receive about $275,000 to develop a new curriculum, which in many cases will cross professional school lines.

That's the case at Maryland, where students from each school will sit in class together and "pore over the same cases," said Mary Lynn McPherson, a professor and vice chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science, who led Maryland's successful proposal along with Sharon Gordon, director of graduate research education in the School of Dentistry.

Dr. Jay Perman, Baltimore campus president, has been emphasizing inter-professional learning and thought it would work well here because everyone has the same goal of treating pain, McPherson said.

McPherson expects that within a year students will begin using the revamped curriculum, which will be continually retooled to add cases and new methods of teaching. She believes Maryland had already been teaching pain at a level above other universities, but students from different programs were not learning other professionals' perspectives.

"Pain is such a difficult problem," she said. "It's physical and psychological and there is a lot of fear involved. It takes a village to treat a pain patient."

In addition to the University of Maryland, Baltimore, other schools chosen for the new task include the University of Washington, Seattle; the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Philadelphia; Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville; the University of Rochester, N.Y.; the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque; the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston; the University of Alabama at Birmingham; the Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine, Philadelphia; the University of California, San Francisco; and the University of Pittsburgh.

The NIH consortium specifically wanted the universities to focus on rehabilitation, arthritis, musculoskeletal, neuropathic and headache pain. They are expected to use the latest research on integrative pain management, the over- and under-prescribing of pain medications, gender's influence on pain and pain in the very young and old.

NBC has found the (new) female lead for its new comedy ?Animal Practice?: JoAnna Garcia will star opposite Justin Kirk in the series.

Garcia (?Better With You,? ?Privileged?) will play Dorothy Crane, the new director of a New York animal hospital founded by her grandmother ? and the ex-girlfriend of cranky veterinarian Dr. George Coleman (Kirk). She wants to change the way the business is run, there?s tension from their personal relationship, comedy ensues.

Garcia is replacing Amy Huberman, who played the part in the pilot.

Garcia?s other recent credits include recurring parts on ?Royal Pains? and ?Gossip Girl.? She also starred in a CBS comedy pilot (which was going by the tentative title ?Oh F***, It?s You?) this spring, but when it wasn?t picked up it freed her to join the NBC show.

?Animal Practice,? which also stars Tyler Labine and Bobby Lee, is scheduled to air on Wednesday nights in the fall. Take a look at the series trailer and let us know how you think Garcia will fit in.
