How Much Revenue Does It Take To Be A $1B Public Company?

1billevilWith all the chatter about Billion dollar valuations -- like Instagram, Evernote, Splunk -- combined with recent S1 filings and IPOs, the topic of tech company valuation is coming to the forefront of people?s minds. Specifically related to the software industry, the growing number of SaaS IPO candidates of late is signaling an important shift in the way that enterprise software is built and sold. It also indicates that the subscription business model is here to stay. What does this shift towards a subscription economy means for startups, investors and the IPO landscape? First of all ? get Instagram out of your mind. The price it sold for is not relevant to us mere mortals who are building B2B software businesses. For all good, non-bubble reasons, SaaS companies need tens of millions in revenue, high growth, and solid business fundamentals. What you may notice though, is that revenue may be lower than what we?ve become accustomed to during the last few years of IPO drought.

Schemer updates Android app, opens the doors to all

Schemer for Android

Schemer -- you know that invite only Google service -- has had an update to its Android application, and has also thrown open the doors to all. Until now access has been by invite only -- think Google Music, Google+, sounds pretty familiar doesn't it. Invites to the service though are no longer required, and anyone can sign up, including right from within the app itself.

The concept itself is pretty interesting, fitting it into your life could be somewhat difficult though. We'll let Google do the explaining -- they do it better than us -- so if you're not familiar, hit the source links at the bottom for more information. There's a short video to be found after the break too. It's kind of fun to fool around with, and now it's open to all it would be rude not to take a look. It's pretty well tied into Google+ too, so you'll find it pretty populated when you step inside.

So, what about the Android application update. Well, besides the ability to sign up now, we also get a refreshed UI. There's a new homepage, with suggestions for schemes for here and now based upon your location, the time and even the weather. Search has been improved with a new search results page showing results from your schemes and other users on one page. You can also search for schemes to do while home vs nearby while you're out and about.

Additionally, we get a new profile page and a whole heap of bug fixes. Whether or not Schemer will stick around, only time will tell. But, you have to love Google for trying out new things. If you fancy trying it out for yourselves, click on past the break for the Google Play Store download links and QR Code.

Star Wars Arcade gets fan made mini-me, weeps tears of joy (video)

Image

Arcade fan (and genius) Le Chuck got up one morning and thought "Why not build a perfect replica of Atari's Star Wars Arcade, at 1:6 scale?" The result is this amazing 12-inch cabinet with a fully working Atari-yoke, handmade from aluminum and a pair of potentiometers. Tucked inside the box is a modded Caanoo running MAME4all, which has been tweaked to boot straight into the game when activated. The whole project took him over 80 hours to put together, but we think it was time very well spent. If you want to see the thing in action (and sing along to the 8-bit version of the theme) then head on past the break.

Twitter Updates iPhone and Android Apps: Improves Discover Tab, Search & Push Notifications

twitter_newbird_boxed_whiteonblueTwitter just announced the latest updates to its mobile apps for Android and iOS. With these updates, these apps get a number of much-needed new features, including an improved Discover tab, better support for search and support for push notifications for interactions. These new push notifications now let you know whenever somebody retweets you, favorites one of your tweets or when somebody new follows you. With this update, Twitter is apparently trying to address some of the criticism it faced when it launched its radically redesigned mobile apps last December.

Google bringing extra bytes to Hawkeye State with $300 million data center

Google bringing extra bytes to Buckeye State with $300 million data center

You're a multinational search company that has just rolled out a new cloud storage offering. You've also just given your millions and millions of email users an extra 2.5GB of storage, free of charge. What do you do next? Build another data center. The big G has announced its intentions to raise a $300 million information barn in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Construction on a 1,000 acre plot will begin immediately and, for its efforts, the Search Sultan will be gifted with a handful of tax incentives totaling over $9 million. Google is no stranger to the mean streets (we're not sure if they're actually mean) of Council Bluffs, though, as the company already operates a $600 million data facility within that city's limits. For those of you keeping track at home, that's a $900 million stimulus for the Hawkeye State.

NBA Baller Beats for Xbox 360 encourages you to play ball in the house

Image

Forget everything your mother told you about playing ball in the house, Majesco thinks it's a terrific idea. NBA Baller Beats takes a rhythmic music game-like approach to the game of roundball, incorporating a real live basketball as a controller for the Xbox 360 title, as part of its full-body tracking Kinect action. And in case you're having trouble motivating off the couch, the gamemakers have brought the likes of Kanye, Run DMC, The Gorillaz and Common to help get you to your feet. Just make sure you remove that priceless antique vase from the living room before you do. At present, all we've got is a teaser trailer, which you can check out after the break. More info is coming at E3.
