For many Londoners, Thursday was their first glimpse of a golden beacon that has spent the past 68 days traveling up and down the country, from Loch Ness to Land's End, as well as going across the water to Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands.

In the north London neighborhood of Camden, many families with young children got up early to cheer as the torch kicked off its relay at the Victorian-era Roundhouse music hall around 6:50 a.m. Others simply hadn't been to bed.

"It was pretty cool to see it actually," said 19-year-old Anastasia Gribaldi, a Goth who had been out all night clubbing. "It was like: 'Wow, it's the torch!' We weren't expecting it."

The torch completes its 70-day, 8,000-mile (12,900-kilometer) journey on Friday, lighting the Olympic Stadium's cauldron in a ceremony marking the official start of the 2012 London Games. The identity of the final torchbearer is still a closely guarded secret.

The torch cruised past some of the city's most impressive landmarks, including the Houses of Parliament, 10 Downing St. and Buckingham Palace, where it was greeted by Prince William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Earlier in the day it sped across London's River Thames along with Paralympic champion Ade Adipitan, whose dreadlocks flapped in the wind as he propelled his wheelchair across the slender Millennium Bridge.

Londoners who have spent much of the past few weeks worrying about rain, Olympic security and possible strikes appeared to lighten up.

In the south London borough of Lambeth, flag-waving crowds chanted "We want the torch!" In nearby Wandsworth, 24-year-old John Lake ? a cancer survivor who has raised thousands for the Brain Research Trust ? pumped his fist and waved the torch back and forth as he ran down the road with a mile-wide grin.

"Make some noise!" someone shouted as the crowd erupted into cheers.

The crowds thickened further as the torch made its way back across the Thames, with Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders ? who played Patsy and Edina in the British comedy "Absolutely Fabulous" ? taking the flame for a jaunty walk in London's wealthy Chelsea neighborhood.

On Oxford Street, London's famous shopping thoroughfare, the torch rode on an open-topped, double-decker bus.

Still, not everyone was caught up in the Olympic excitement.

"It was pretty convenient that it came through as I was getting my morning coffee," said Jack Tate, a 28-year-old retail worker in Camden. "Now I can say I've seen it. There's no need to watch any more of this Olympics rubbish for the next few weeks."

Lace plants explain programmed cell death

ScienceDaily (July 23, 2012) ? Programmed cell death (PCD) is a highly regulated process that occurs in all animals and plants as part of normal development and in response to the environment. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Plant Biology is the first to document the physiological events in the lace plant (Aponogeton madagascariensis) which occur via PCD to produce the characteristic holes in its leaves.

The aquatic lace plant, endemic to Madagascar, uses PCD to generate holes in its leaves. Researchers from Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, used long-term live cell imaging, time-lapse micro-photography and detailed staining to see what actually happens inside individual cells of the lace plant leaves during this process.

PCD always begins in the centre of areoles (areas surrounded by veins) and works its way out, finally stopping four or five cells away from the vein. Within these areoles the stage of PCD can be visually determined by pigmentation. Non-PCD cells contain anthocyanin which is pink. As PCD progresses (early-PCD) the anthocyanin disappears but green chlorophyll remains. By late-PCD, both of these pigments have been lost.

Arunika Gunawardena, who led this research, described what actually happens in more detail, "After the loss of anthocyanin, we saw a reduction in the number and size of chloroplasts concurrent with changes in the actin cytoskeleton, which normally supports the cell from the inside. Actin cables became thicker, but their arrangement became more haphazard (until late-PCD when they began to disappear)."

As PCD progressed chloroplasts and mitochondria (the energy centres of the cell) began to aggregate together and were brought into the acidic vacuole to be degraded -- a process that was confirmed using 3D image analysis. Additionally, the researchers found evidence of autophagy (where the cells literally begin to 'eat' themselves from the inside) and discovered organelle-like remnants inside vesicles.

Dr Gunawardena continued, "For each cell we observed, eventually the tonoplast ruptured, and the plasma membrane surrounding the cell collapsed. It only takes 48 hours from the first noticeable loss in chlorophyll until the plasma membrane shrinks, and by 24 hours after this event the cell wall disappears."

This is the first research to use such a variety of visual techniques to look at a process that affects almost every cell type at some stage of an organism's life. These pictures and videos provide a fascinating insight into how the lace plant has high-jacked PCD to produce its quirky, yet beautiful, leaves.

Nasogastric ingestion will have to be done by the vets. To make sure they do swallow the dose, you can do one of two things. Place your thumbs into either side of their mouth to make them open up their mouth and swallow the paste or liquid they were holding in their mouth, or put your hand under their chin and tip their head up so they must swallow. Despite popular knowledge, internal parasites could essentially kill farm pets or animals. This doesn?t rule out horses. Parasites are usually out of sight but they can trigger severe damage on the insides.

Obama negative ads could hurt personal popularity

NEW YORK (AP) ? President Barack Obama's campaign has been running television commercials that suggest Mitt Romney might be a tax cheat. Another ad uses a clip of the Republican singing an off-key rendition of "America the Beautiful" to ding him for having overseas bank accounts. Another Obama-sponsored spot states flatly: "Mitt Romney's not the solution. He's the problem."

So much for the promise of hope, change and bipartisan unity that propelled Obama to victory in 2008.

To win a second term, the Democrat who once pledged to usher in a more civilized political era has turned to highly critical commercials ? at turns personal and snarky ? to go toe to toe with Romney in a campaign noteworthy for its negativity and intensity. But Obama risks turning off voters who generally despise negative ads and undercutting what is arguably his greatest asset ? his personal popularity ? in a razor-thin race expected to be won in just a handful of competitive states.

There was never any doubt that Obama would run hard-hitting ads.

For one, he's proven to be a cut-throat campaigner, having assailed Sen. John McCain on TV four years ago even as he cultivated an image as someone who always played above-board politics. Democrats long have said Obama's best hopes for re-election may lie with disqualifying Romney given that the economy remains sluggish and the country is divided over or outright opposes some of the president's signature policies, like the health care law.

The president seemed to acknowledge his campaign's gamble in one of his newest TV ads.

"Sometimes politics can seem very small," Obama says, as he speaks reassuringly into the camera.

To be sure, Romney and the conservative-leaning independent groups that support his candidacy aren't blameless in the negative ad campaign, having run plenty of spots scorching Obama as incompetent, hostile to business and overly wedded to government intervention. Those ads are consistent with Romney's general strategy of making the race a referendum on the president's record and not building up Romney's own credibility and popularity.

It's a blueprint that worked for Romney during the Republican primaries, where he became the likely presidential nominee by vanquishing his rivals with negative ads but at a cost to how voters viewed him. An Associated Press-GfK survey taken in April after Romney emerged as the apparent nominee found Obama was viewed more positively than Romney by 58-43 percent.

In the general election, polling shows Obama still has a broad advantage over Romney in what pollsters call "likability." The gap is a major reason the race has remained competitive despite the slow economic recovery and persistently high unemployment. A USA Today/Gallup Poll released Tuesday found 60 percent of voters see Obama as likable, compared to just 30 percent for Romney.

"If Barack Obama's re-election were just a matter of people liking him better than Mitt Romney, the election would be over and Obama would be cruising to victory," says Quinnipiac University pollster Peter Brown. "The question instead is whether they want him running the country for the next four years."

Obama advisers say they have little choice but to assail Romney in ads, both to raise questions about the former Massachusetts governor's finances and business dealings and to deflect attention from the president's stewardship of the economy. The campaign's ad spending has totaled about $100 million so far, most of it on negative ads. Democratic independent groups, led by Priorities USA Action, have kicked in another $20 million for advertising, almost all of it trashing Romney.

To that end, the Obama campaign has sought to make Romney an unacceptable alternative, focusing its ads on the conduct of Romney's former private equity firm Bain Capital and secrets surrounding his vast wealth.

In May, Obama ran heart-tugging ads in crucial states featuring workers who had lost their jobs at companies Bain Capital had bought and managed.

"It was like a vampire. They came in and sucked the life out of us," said Jack Cobb, a steelworker featured in the ad.

The Obama team later focused on outsourcing, pointing to companies Bain Capital had invested in that carried out some work overseas.

"As a corporate raider, he shipped jobs to China and Mexico. As governor, he did the same thing," said one Obama commercial.

Next came criticism of Romney's finances.

"Tax havens, offshore accounts, carried interest. Romney's used every trick in the book," another Obama ad says, chiding Romney for refusing to release more of his income tax returns. His reluctance to do so "makes you wonder if some years he paid any taxes at all," the ad says, offering no evidence to support that claim.

Sara Fagen, a Republican strategist who was White House political director under George W. Bush, predicted that Obama's shift in tone from four years ago could depress turnout among young people and other constituencies he'll need in a close race.

"His only path to victory is slash and burn, but it flies in the face of his messaging in 2008," Fagen said. "Voters think he's a good guy, he's a good family man. But when the campaign is as negative as it is, it gives them reason to believe he's just another politician."

Bush's successful 2004 re-election campaign made a similar calculation against Democrat John Kerry, running a heavy level of negative ads against the Massachusetts senator immediately after he locked up his party's nomination that spring. The Bush campaign got a key assist from Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, an independent group that ran ads questioning Kerry's military record.

Bush, like Obama, had been elected on a promise to bring partisan factions together but saw his job approval rating sag during the unpopular war in Iraq. His re-election calculation proved successful. He defeated Kerry by a 51-48 margin, carrying most major swing states.

Bob Shrum, a Democratic strategist who oversaw Kerry's campaign, said Obama could not rest on a good guy image. Shrum said the strategy the campaign is following is effective.

"If people thought the ads were out of bounds or about something that wasn't fair or relevant, it would be a different story. But they don't think that at all," Shrum said, adding: "'Obama the positive uniter' is not in the cards at this point."

An Equally Tragic Death in Chicago

There is something obscene about a child dying before their parent. I cannot imagine the pain, the anguish of losing a child. America is in mourning because of the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado this past weekend. My heart hurts with all the families impacted by the actions of that mad man. There was an equally tragic death in Chicago this past weekend. But very few will hear about it. Very few will talk about it because it encroaches on the idol of abortion and the so -called woman?s right of choice that has captivated the nation since 1973.

Abortion, the most unregulated surgical procedure in the nation has claimed another life ? that of Tonya Reaves. Remember her name.??A young 24 year old daughter, sister, and mother, she is the latest victim to die at the hands of Planned Parenthood and their abortionists. For years organizations like Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation have told us?that ?abortion is one of the safest medical procedures provided in the United States and Canada today?. Really? I think Tonya?s family would beg to differ with that statement. Their daughter, sister, mother who left home on Friday to get that safe medical procedure, did not come back to her family and Instead she was transported to a local hospital where she died as a result of ?a hemorrhage, with a cervical dilation and evacuation, as well as an intrauterine pregnancy as contributing causes?.??What was Planned Parenthood at 18 S. Michigan Av in Chicago?s response? ?We were shocked and saddened upon learning of a tragic development at a nearby hospital? they said? as if the injury that sent her to that nearby hospital had no bearing on them and their facility.

At a time when Planned Parenthood is working to convince the black community that black women are experiencing a lack of access to quality reproductive health care and therefore need more of their facilities in urban areas, I??find it particularly interesting that Planned Parenthood did not openly discuss this disparity in reproductive healthcare:??the numbers of young black women that have lost their lives at the hands of negligent abortionists. Nor do they discuss the numbers of young black women who have lost their fertility because of the ?safe? abortion in their reproductive health care dens.

Most abortionists in America are not operating under reasonable standards of medical care for ambulatory medical centers.??Abortionists more times than we know, perforate the bowels or intestines of the woman as was the case when a teen was injured by Nicola Riley who Baltimore ruled a danger to society. They over medicate patients more than we know as was the case in Philadelphia when?Karnamay Mongar??was?given too much Demerol and died.?Some?do not have standard equipment to monitor the patient as was the case when Laura Hope Smith lost her life at the hands of?Rapin Osathanondh, in Massachusetts. The failure to take a complete and accurate medical history is an issue in the case of a young woman from Johnson City, TN who had a late term abortion performed by Tyrone Malloy in Atlanta, GA and hemorrhaged to death. She had a history of sickle cell anemia, a factor that should have made her ineligible for the unmonitored abortion.

These are but a few of the injuries that have occurred across the United States. Using 1999 data, the Guttmacher Institute (the research arm of Planned Parenthood), in their 2011Facts on Induced Abortion in the United States?tell us that??The risk of abortion complications is minimal: Fewer than 0.3% of abortion patients experience a complication that requires hospitalization?. First let us realize this is 1999 data and we are some thirteen years away from that study. But let us suppose this number is accurate. That translates into more than three thousand women each year that have been harmed at the abortionist hand.And we have no idea how many of them recovered from their injury. Some did not. Some were never able to have children because the damage was so great it result in a hysterectomy or permanent sterilization.

Later in that same document, they provide information that I think?the average woman does not know:???The risk of death associated with abortion increases with the length of pregnancy, from one death for every one million abortions at or before eight weeks to one per 29,000 at 16?20 weeks?and one per 11,000 at 21 or more weeks? and I doubt the abortionist informs her of this potentially life impacting fact before he does the procedure. According to the Guttmacher Institute about nineteen percent of the approximately 1.2 million abortions each year are performed on women who are sixteen or more weeks pregnant. Each year then we can expect seven to eight deaths of the mother.??I can only wonder if this information is shared with the mother before the procedure. Oh, I am sure they will pull out their consent forms and tell us they discussed it with the patient, because they will go to any length to cover up their negligence and lack of reasonable care.??

In reality we have no way of measuring the accuracy of Guttmacher?s numbers because the industry is unregulated and as such are not required to keep or share accurate records. I just finished reading The?Scarlett Lady, Confessions of a Successful Abortionist?by Carol Everett. She starts the book showcasing her facilities as the Neiman-Marcus of the industry. She ends the book describing the disgrace into which they had fallen ? actually performing the abortion procedure on women who were not pregnant. She goes on to describe a death and several botched abortions that were covered up and swept away by cooperating hospitals and doctors.

The patient in Chicago died on Friday. On Saturday we learned that an autopsy had already been completed and her death was ruled an accident. I can only pray that her family seeks a real autopsy that will reveal what I suspect is a lack of reasonable medical care on the part of Planned Parenthood. I pray for comfort for her family as they wrestle to reconcile what happened. I pray they will not be swayed by the dollars that Planned Parenthood may try to throw at them to make this go away. I pray justice will be had for Tonya so that no more of our daughters, sisters and mothers have to die on the altar of substandard medical practices most abortionists adhere to.??Let us join together and demand abortionists be held be held accountable when they take a life or reproductively maim another woman.

World's first violet nonpolar vertical-cavity laser technology created

ScienceDaily (July 23, 2012) ? In a leap forward for laser technology, a team at University of California, Santa Barbara, has developed the first violet nonpolar vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) based on m-plane gallium nitride semiconductors.

This recent discovery by LED pioneer Shuji Nakamura and his research team at UCSB is an achievement in VCSEL technology that opens doors for higher optical efficiency lasers at greatly reduced manufacturing costs for a variety of applications.

"We have demonstrated working, electrically-injected nonpolar m-plane nitride VCSELs lasing at room temperature, and have shown that such devices are naturally polarization-locked along the crystallographic a-direction of the wurtzite crystal. This is in contrast to the majority of VCSELs, which are typically randomly polarized," said Dr. Daniel Feezell, project scientist with Nakamura's lab. Feezell directed the research effort with Nakamura and Steven DenBaars , Co-Directors of the Solid State Lighting and Energy Center at UCSB , and graduate student Casey Holder. Their findings have been submitted for publication.

"This is the first report of a nonpolar VCSEL, which we believe to be one of the biggest breakthroughs in the field of laser diode technology," explained Nakamura, a professor of Materials at UCSB . "The nonpolar VCSEL has a lot of advantages in comparison with conventional c-plane devices. One major advantage is that the light polarization is locked to one direction. This device could be used for a variety of applications, such as lighting, displays, sensors, and technology that requires energy efficiency and small form-factor."

VCSELs offer advantages over conventional edge-emitting laser technology for some applications. On-wafer testing of VCSEL arrays during the manufacturing process, for example, can save costs compared to edge-emitting lasers that require additional steps before they can be tested. VCSELs exhibit low threshold currents, circular and low divergence output beams, and are easily integrated into two-dimensional arrays.

The nonpolar VCSEL platform also provides high optical gain, which helps to increase optical efficiency of devices. "The nonpolar VCSEL could enable new products and applications, such as pico-projectors for smartphones, mobile cinema, or even automotive lighting," said DenBaars, professor of Materials.

"This breakthrough achievement by our Solid State Lighting and Energy Center leverages UCSB's globally recognized strength in materials science and engineering," commented Rod Alferness, Dean of the College of Engineering at UCSB.
