Saddest Singapore wedding fact of the day: To save money, most weddings I attended use styrofoam made fake wedding cakes. The ballroom maybe the grandest in the city. There may be three dress changes for the bride. The food maybe costly.
But the damn five tier cake would always be fake.
About fifteen years ago, here in the U.S. I attended the wedding of one of my husband?s cousins. The ceremony itself was the most ostentatious I?ve ever seen held in a church. Ten couples attended the bride and groom. The main aisle of the cathedral was decorated with ten metal arches covered with fresh flowers.
The reception was held in the ballroom of a lavish club, with over 400 guests, most of whom were friends or business acquaintances of the parents, rather than relatives. All the beverages, including the soft drinks, were watered. There were several courses served at dinner, but the portions were very small. At one end of the room, though, behind velvet ropes, was a sweets table that looked like every child?s fantasy come true. There were tortes, bowls of fresh fruit, plates of Itallian pastries, and, of course, the tiered wedding cake. Everyone was looking at it with with longing.
At eleven pm, the servers finally removed the velvet ropes, and the still-hungry guests nearly stampeded to the sweets table - only to find that the tortes were glitter-covered cardboard, the fresh fruits were actually plastic, and the pastries, except for three or four dozen cannolis, were likewise inedible.
After tiny slices of the wedding cake had been served, I actually saw guests bringing bags of food from the local McDonalds and Burger King into the ballroom. I remember that, when we got home, we made something to eat before we went to sleep.
Now that is just CRUEL O_o A whole FAKE BUFFET. OMG. Seriously, you might as well have included a footnote to the inviation of ?please eat lunch before you attend" or something.
