Air New Zealand services between Hong Kong and London are to be dropped from March next year.
As a result, around 70 London-based cabin crew roles will be lost.
Air New Zealand started flying the Hong Kong-London route in October 2006 ?and has operated the service between five and seven times a week.
But the airline?s chief executive Rob Fyfe says a comprehensive review of the route found it would not become profitable in the foreseeable future.
He says quitting Hong Kong will allow the airline to increase its capacity on North American routes to Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Passengers who already have tickets to fly between Hong Kong and London after March 4, 2013 will be contacted and re-booked by Air New Zealand or their agent. The airline says there are approximately 8000 customers who will be affected.
Meanwhile, Air New Zealand has also announced a new strategic agreement with Cathay Pacific to fly between Auckland and Hong Kong from December this year.
?The agreement will see both carriers continue to operate the same frequency between Auckland and Hong Kong while introducing code share on each other?s flights,? says Mr Fyfe.
Both Air New Zealand and Cathay Pacific offer daily services year round between Auckland and Hong Kong, but Cathay Pacific also offers up to double daily services over the peak travel period between December and March.
